The epicenter was ME-CENTRAL-1, specifically mec1-az2. Then it got messier. The blast radius spread and mec1-az3 was later affected too. Cue loud reporting, louder memes, and Reddit doing what Reddit does. Meanwhile, operators had the same old problem: keep prod alive.

AWS data center “bombed”? The factual version of what we know
Here’s the cleanest wording based on AWS status messaging and reporting. Not vibes.
- AWS said around 4:30 AM PST an Availability Zone, mec1-az2, “was impacted by objects that struck the data center, creating sparks and fire.” The local fire department shut off power while responding. This was reported by Reuters and echoed by other outlets.
- DataCenterDynamics used the same objects…sparks and fire language and called out customer-facing API issues, especially networking-related EC2 calls. It also reported the disruption later included mec1-az3.
- CRN reported two Availability Zones were significantly impacted. AWS advised customers to ingest S3 data to an alternate AWS Region and warned about high failure rates for ingest and egress.
- The Register later reported an update saying AWS confirmed drone strikes. It said two facilities in the UAE were “directly struck,” plus a nearby strike in Bahrain caused physical impacts, and sprinklers with water damage complicated recovery.
So was an AWS data center bombed? Public phrasing varies depending on the source and when it was written. AWS initially said “objects.” Later reporting points to drone strikes. Either way, from the customer side it looks the same when it hits the fan: AZ impairment, power loss, service errors, and a nasty regional blast radius.
What actually failed: Availability Zones, regions, and the “blast radius” problem
A lot of people saw mec1-az2 and had the same realization. “Wait… what exactly is an Availability Zone again?”
AWS describes it like this. A Region is the geographic cluster. An Availability Zone is one or more discrete data centers with independent power, cooling, and networking inside Region. AZs are separated by real distance, linked by low-latency networking, and designed so faults don’t domino.
AWS also states it spans 123 Availability Zones across 39 geographic Regions, with more announced.

And here’s the catch nobody wants to hear when things are calm. Fault isolation only helps if you actually use it.
Reports saying customers running redundantly across multiple AZs weren’t impacted… that’s the whole story. If anything stateful was pinned to one AZ, or you accidentally pinned it, which happens all the time, an AZ going dark stops being theory.
What broke for customers in me-central-1

- Early on, EC2 instances, EBS volumes, and RDS databases in the impacted AZ became unavailable.
- As it expanded, customers in the remaining zones reported EC2 API errors and problems launching instances.

- AWS advised customers to ingest S3 data to an alternate AWS Region, and warned restoration would involve assessing data health and possible storage repair.
And yes, the “AWS data center bombed” phrasing traveled faster than the useful details. I’ve been on incidents where the group chat was 80% jokes and 20% “uh… who owns DNS?” Funny, until it isn’t.
How I’d respond as an operator (a practical checklist)
If you run production on AWS, here’s the calm, do-this-now list I’d personally follow during an event like this.
1) Confirm impact using official signals, not vibes
Check a few angles, because one signal can lie.
- AWS Health and status messaging, and your AWS Support case if you have one
- Your own telemetry, error rates, saturation, latency, queue depth
- Dependency mapping, what’s hard-pinned to the region or AZ
2) Fail over the right way: AZ first, then region
If you built for it, the first move is usually shifting traffic to healthy AZs. But when two AZs are impaired, you may need the escape hatch fast.
Stuff people actually do:
- Route 53 failover or weighted routing to a standby region
- Active/active across regions for stateless tiers
- Warm standby for stateful systems like databases, queues, identity
3) Make S3 and data portability real, not “we’ll do it later”
If you’re taking AWS’ advice to ingest to an alternate region, replication and a tested plan matter. A lot.
S3 replication can be configuration-heavy, sure. But on the day-of, the move can be as blunt as copying critical prefixes to a bucket in another region:

You can’t control geopolitics. You can control how much of your system depends on one building.
