Funny how works.
That push-pull is basically premium soil for AI fearmongering.
I want to get concrete about what AI fearmongering looks like, why it spreads so easily in our industry, and how to push back without shrugging off real risks. Because yes, AI can do real harm. But fear is a terrible operating system for engineering decisions. It crashes a lot.

A simple definition you can quote:
AI fearmongering is exaggerated or incentive-driven messaging about AI risks that amplifies dread while skipping evidence, uncertainty, and workable mitigations.
And no, it’s not the same thing as AI safety. Real safety work is specific. You can test it.But can measure it. Fearmongering is vibes with a press tour.
Common fearmongering patterns
“Only we can build this safely.”
Axios points out a neat trick: portray AI as immensely powerful, maybe dangerous, and you quietly imply only a few special companies can handle it responsibly. Great for fundraising.Plus for market positioning.
Ambiguous language makes AI sound like it has agency.
A Reddit thread on r/ExperiencedDevs calls out how people toss around words like “thinking” and “choosing not to shut itself down.” Meanwhile, in practice, these systems still need heavy vetting and supervision.
Job-apocalypse math with no model.
Big numbers get repeated until “exposed” turns into “gone,” and “tasks” magically becomes “jobs.” It’s a translation error that just happens to be terrifying.
So the real question isn’t “are there AI risks?” Of course there are. The question is whether the story someone is selling helps reduce risk, or whether it mostly helps them.
Why AI fearmongering spreads
I don’t think most people pushing scary AI narratives are cartoon villains twirling mustaches. But incentives do what incentives do. They tug the steering wheel even when nobody admits they’re steering.
1) Fundraising and “moat by panic”
Axios described CEO messaging reinforces the idea that only a handful of companies can build AI safely. It also quoted White House AI czar David Sacks saying: “They’re scaring the bejeezus out of the public.”
Spicy quote, sure. The bigger point is the dynamic. Fear concentrates power. People get anxious, then they cling to whoever claims they’ve got the only lifeboat.
2) Layoffs with a convenient scapegoat
The r/ExperiencedDevs post argues layoffs often get pinned on AI even when macro factors like interest rates, tax changes, demand corrections are doing the heavy lifting.
I’ve seen the same storyline play out: “AI did it” is neat and tidy. “We overhired and money got expensive” is… less sexy. And a lot more embarrassing.
3) Media attention and engagement loops
Fear travels faster than nuance. Always has.
And AI is abstract enough that everybody can project their favorite disaster onto it. Job loss. Deepfakes. Skynet. Take your pick.
AI fearmongering vs. Real labor-market data
Let’s take a breath and look at the boring numbers. Boring is good.Still is where planning lives.
What the IMF actually said
The IMF warns that nearly 40% of jobs globally could be affected by AI. It breaks down exposure like this:
- About 60% of jobs in advanced economies
- About 40% in emerging markets
- About 26% in low-income countries
The IMF’s framing matters here. AI can replace some jobs and complement others. It also warns AI will likely worsen overall inequality in many scenarios, unless policy and adoption choices counteract it.

- One in four workers are in an occupation with some GenAI exposure
- Only 3.3% of global employment sits in the highest exposure category
- Exposure differs by gender: 4.7% of women vs 2.4% of men are in the highest exposure category
- Exposure rises with income level: about 34% in high-income countries vs about 11% in low-income countries
- Clerical occupations remain among the highest exposure
This is the stuff fearmongering conveniently skips. Because gradients are hard to tweet. “Robots are coming” fits on a bumper sticker.
AI fearmongering hides today’s harms
One reason I can’t stand AI fearmongering is it hogs the spotlight. It sucks all the oxygen out of the room. Meanwhile, the current harms keep rolling out the door.

Next quarter? Five years? If the timeline is “soon,” my eyebrows go up. “Soon” is where accountability goes to die.Who benefits if i believe this?
Fundraising. Vendor lock-in. Wage suppression. Regulation that freezes competitors. Sometimes it’s not even subtle.What are the mitigations?
If there aren’t any, it’s probably theatre.

NIST’s AI Risk Management Framework is widely referenced and voluntary. The point is helping organizations identify, assess, and manage AI risks across the lifecycle. Even if you don’t implement it end to end, the mindset helps: map the system, map the harms, measure what you can, put governance in place doesn’t fall apart the second leadership changes.
